In 2006, Jana traveled to North Africa to begin working on a project she and Reine have long fantasized about: to publish a picture book depicting wedding traditions old and new from around the world. She wrote this in her journal on her way back home.
"As photographers, we are constantly on the look out for our next adventure. Whether it be an exploration into culture, religion, and customs of a faraway land or simply a documentation thereof, there exists a constant craving to learn, to witness and to capture.
In this time of globalization, instantaneous transmission of information, relentless technological advancement and pursuit of all things materialistic, we fellow human beings rarely feel content, peaceful, satisfied.
The old axiom, 'newer is better,' is just false. We need to slow down, re-commune with our ancestors and become better acquainted with where we came from. It is this knowledge that is the source of our ability to learn, stay focused, stay positive. When you know yourself, who you are, it is easy to evolve. However primitive we may consider some of the customs passed down to us by our mothers, there is beauty, truth and a piece of our own history that will always make up a part of who we are, where we came from and how we got to the place we find ourselves today.
Unlike North America, what I've discovered in Africa seems on the surface to be more traditional, more meaningful _ a greater sense of spirituality and a greater awareness of heritage and culture. I am going to use some of the work here to start our book _ the traditional wedding book we keep talking about. Perhaps it will serve as a reminder of things forgotten or it will pay homage to lost traditions _ not for purely historical purposes, but just maybe to preserve such customs for future generations and to give them a permanent place in history."
